Ellesmere Port scoops a Silver North West in Bloom award
7 November 2019Ellesmere Port’s very first full entry in the North West in Bloom competition has achieved an impressive Silver award in the Small City category.
It follows on from last year’s highly successful non-competitive ‘Neighbourhood’ entry into the prestigious horticultural competition.
North West in Bloom judges visited the town in August this year to assess the work being done by the community groups and businesses involved. The group is chaired by Joanna Pemberton from Trinity Church and is supported by Cheshire West and Chester Council.
At a ceremony at the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre, representatives responsible for the town’s entry were also thrilled to hear that the Friends of Wolverham, Trinity Church and The Port Grocery also achieved a ‘Level 3 – Advancing’ award in the Neighbourhood category.Ledsham and Capenhurst entered the full competition for the first time this year and received a Bronze Award.
The Council’s Director of Place Operations, Maria Byrne said: “I’m delighted Council teams were able to support this year’s full entry into the North West in Bloom competition. It is all about bringing members of the community together to make a positive change to the place they live, work or spend their leisure time.
“So many groups are doing marvellous work all over the town and I’m delighted the judges were impressed by the wonderful results being achieved.”
Joanna Pemberton of Trinity Church, Chair of the group said:” The Ellesmere Port in Bloom steering group attend the RHS Britain in Bloom awards in Southport and had no idea if we had won in any category. Although we had planned to improve on our “Thriving” award last year, focusing on saving our bees, pollinating planting and sustainability. Having worked so hard with a dedicated team of volunteers, plus the Council’s StreetCare and Localities teams - our amazing transformational efforts paid off.
“There is a long list of people involved in this year’s entry, a huge thank-you to everyone involved.”
