Essential Northwich roundabout upgrade works start soon
10 February 2016The next step in a multi-million pound scheme to upgrade one of Northwich’s busiest junctions is due to take place shortly, following essential utility company diversion works which have recently been undertaken.
Cheshire West and Chester Council has tendered the improvement works for the A559 Chester Way/Leicester Street roundabout and successful bidders, AE Yates, will start work on Monday (February 15). The scheme is scheduled to be completed in September 2016.
The Council and their contractors will work with traders to reduce the impact of the scheme and minimise disruption to local businesses and residents. During the construction, access will be maintained to businesses and residents. However, to carry out the works safely, diversion routes will be in operation at certain times.
Councillor Brian Clarke, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Infrastructure, said: “The improvements to Chester Way/Leicester Street roundabout are essential to significantly improve traffic flow, so the town can cope with the extra traffic generated by new retail and leisure developments such as Barons Quay, Memorial Court and the Lion Salt Works.
“They will also ensure that pedestrians and cyclists can continue to navigate these roads safely.
“We will continue to work with traders and residents to minimise any disruption, and will be keeping them informed as the scheme progresses.”
Traffic signals will be installed to improve safety for all users of the roundabout and additional parking will be provided nearby to support local businesses.
