Lache Community Centre providing recovery support

17 December 2018

Cheshire West and Chester Council has teamed up with ICUsteps Chester, a support group for those who have experienced time in intensive care and the trauma of life-threatening critical illness, to help individuals during their rehabilitation.

Councillor Louise Gittins, Cabinet Member Communities and Wellbeing said: “Working with ICUsteps, new weekly fitness sessions have been developed at the Venue, Lache Community Centre to encourage and support individuals that have experienced life changing conditions.

“The new sessions have grown out of a rehabilitation gym class at the Countess of Chester hospital, however due to limited spaces this can only be accessed by a small group at a time, leading to these sessions in Lache”.

The sessions take place every Tuesday are run by Lache resident Wes Watton who has been given the opportunity to gain experience whilst studying: “Training ICU patients has been unbelievably rewarding. Helping people go from strength to strength each week has given me focus to carry on with the path we have created”.

Sue Dean chair of ICUsteps Chester who herself spent time in ICU added: “It can leave you feeling physically and mentally weak and you can leave you not knowing what to do next.

“Not only do we have our fitness sessions but we also use it as a social day to talk about issues over lunch and a cup of tea”.
