Council's Licensing Team gives festive safety advice

14 December 2015

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Licensing Team has some essential tips for party-goers on getting home safely and hiring a licensed taxi during the festive season.

It is the responsibility of Cheshire West and Chester Council to license taxis, private hire vehicles and drivers.

Licensed taxis (hackney cabs) can be hired immediately from a rank or by hailing in the street, while private hire vehicles can only be booked through a licensed operator.

Councillor Mark Henesy, Cabinet Member for Environment and Community, said: “At this time of year, many of us will be using a taxi or private hire vehicle for the festive celebrations.

“Before you get into the vehicle, check they are displaying their licence plate on both the front and back. This shows the name of the licensing authority, the licence number and also the registration of the vehicle.

“A licensed driver will also display or wear an ID badge with their licence number and local council name on it. If possible make a note of the vehicle or driver’s number.

“Christmas is a time of celebration, and if you are going out, please enjoy yourself, drink responsibly and keep yourself and your friends safe. Ensure you only use licensed vehicles and drivers, plan your journey home and, if possible, book ahead.” Do not use a taxi or private hire vehicle if:
  • There are no taxi or private hire plates on the vehicle
  • The driver is asking you if you want a taxi or a lift home
  • If booked in advance, the driver does not have your details
  • The driver cannot identify himself, or the picture on the badge does not match the driver.
  • The vehicle is in a state of disrepair.
  • You are uneasy for any reason.
