A week of cycling courses at Lache Summer Play Scheme

22 August 2017

Cycling safety courses have been held during the summer holidays at Lache Summer Play Scheme, based in Lache Primary School.

The courses were organised by Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Road Safety Team and funded by Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service and local ward member, Cllr Jane Mercer.

The courses were aimed at six to twelve year olds and the sessions offered children the opportunity to learn to ride and then to improve on basic skills.

Provided by trainers, Cycle Experience, the ‘Learn to Ride’ course offered either one or  two hours of riding in a traffic-free environment for beginners and then the level one course helped with balance and control.

Level one takes place off-road, for example, on a playground, and is designed to develop the basic control skills and understanding fundamental to being able to ride on the road.

These skills include getting on and off the bike, starting, stopping, pedalling, riding in a straight line, looking behind and signalling without wobbling.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Karen Shore said: “On behalf of all the children I would like to thank all those involved in co-ordinating and delivering this essential training that will equip the children with the skills required to make them safer cyclists on our roads now and in the future.

“I’m also grateful for the additional funding provided by The Woodward Trust, Chester Municipal Charities and John Halewood Foundation.  Many thanks for your support.”  Bren Bikes a local charity in Chester also supported the event by offering free bike maintenance checks prior to the event so the children’s bikes were working safely and correctly for the course.
