Work begins on new city gateway in Frodsham Street

21 June 2016

Public realm improvement works to create a new city gateway in Frodsham Street, Chester will begin on Monday, 27 June.

To carry out these works safely Frodsham Street will be closed for approximately six months, and the way Frodsham Street traffic is routed through the city will be changed.

Buses that currently use Frodsham Street to access Foregate Street will need to be routed differently and from 27 June they will use Love Street and Foregate Street. Work has begun to put three bus stops in Love Street and widen the pavement outside Argos in Foregate Street to create more space for bus passengers. Bus stops will also be used on Vicars Lane and the Bars.

Full details of the new routes and bus stops is available on the council website (www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/frodshamstreet) and information leaflets will be available on buses.

To ease the flow of traffic and maintain services for businesses and residents, it has also been necessary to join Eastgate Street to Foregate Street.

A temporary road surface has been laid in place of the existing paved area outside the Royal Bank of Scotland.  Traffic will use the temporary road while Frodsham Street is closed.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Infrastructure, Councillor Brian Clarke said: “This is a very exciting phase of the Bus Interchange Project.  The transformation of Frodsham Street will create a new fitting gateway to the city.

“It’s also important to stress that all businesses in Frodsham Street will be open as usual during the works.  I’d like to thank all the bus companies, shops and stall holders affected by these works for their patience and support.

“Staff from the Council’s Planning and Strategic Transport Team will be out and about wearing high-vis in Frodsham Street, Foregate Street and Love Street on Monday 27 June to give advice and guidance to bus passengers if needed.”
