Pupils’ road safety message is on song

11 December 2018

Pupils from Ellesmere Port have come together to create a unique music video to promote safer parking outside their schools and that walking to school is fun.

The “Park Safe” video involves children from five primary schools in the town: Parklands, Cambridge Road, Our Lady's, Meadow and Rossmore.

The idea for the a video was originally conceived by the Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Families, Councillor Nicole Meardon working with the Council’s Road Safety Team.  They wanted to find a unique and attention-grabbing way of getting across the message that parking on zig-zag lines outside school gates puts children’s lives in danger.

Ellesmere Port-based creative and production arts company, Chalice Media, were then invited to create a catchy song and - armed with such - went on to work with the five schools.

After visiting each of the schools and discussing and exploring the importance of road safety through performance workshops, the team invited the pupils to think about what was most important to them in terms of road safety.

The result is an impressive music video featuring pupils from all five schools that really gets the message across.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Families, Councillor Nicole Meardon said: “I am immensely proud to see the end result of everyone’s hard work.  Irresponsible parking outside schools continues to be a problem for our Road Safety Team but using pupils to get the message across to parents, guardians and carers is the perfect solution.

Laura Harris, Artistic Director at Chalice Media added: “We have found this project to be surprising and challenging at times, but above all it has been incredibly rewarding.  It’s been a pleasure to work with such a wonderfully mixed group of children and we’re delighted with the results.

The video can be viewed on YouTube (search ‘Park Safe Cheshire West’) or here.
