Bank stabilisation works completed at Winsford beauty spot

7 February 2017

Extensive works to stabilise a slipping stream bank at Wades Clough Woodlands in Winsford have been completed by Cheshire West and Chester Council.  Footpaths and steps in the woodland have also been improved.

Wades Clough is an area of semi-natural ancient woodland within a stream valley located within a residential area in Winsford.  Part of the site is designated as a Site of Biological Importance (SBI), recognising its local value in terms of the wildlife that the woodland supports.

Gabions have been installed along the banks of Wades Brook, which runs through the beauty spot, to prevent slippage affecting the gardens of nearby properties.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Well-being, Councillor Louise Gittins said: “It's a really beautiful spot the improvements works have made a big difference.

“Wades Brook runs through the woodland and was causing the banks to slide, which could have eventually caused the nearby homes to slip too.  The stablisation works have now prevented this and will also improve the natural water flow.”

“The improvements were organised after requests from local residents.” The area has a wide variety of tree species including oak, ash and willow, with an understorey of hazel, hawthorn and elder. The ground flora includes bluebells, wild arum, dog's mercury and ferns.
