Work to replace equipment at Blacon crematorium begins

5 July 2018

Work to replace equipment at Blacon crematorium is set to start this weekend, Saturday 7 July.

The existing equipment was installed in 2012 when a new crematorium building was constructed. Since then there have been technological advances in cremation processes and filtration equipment as part of the industry’s aim to minimise the environmental impact of cremations.

The existing filtration equipment at the crematorium will be replaced in order to address performance issues that had been identified. Whilst the issues have not affected any cremations they have meant the preferred filtration levels have not been achieved. The upgrade work will help contribute to an overall aim of halving mercury emissions produced by all crematoria in the UK.

Cabinet Member Environment, Councillor Karen Shore said: “It is important that we carry out this work, however, first and foremost our residents are our priority.

“The timing of the work has been planned to allow cremation services to be offered as usual for the vast majority of time that the work is taking place.  Most of the work will take place at weekends, but there will be a few occasions when the number of cremation services able to be offered will be reduced. Where this is the case the crematorium team will work with local Funeral Directors to help minimise any impact for bereaved families.”

Local residents living close by have been informed and work is expected to be completed before Christmas.
