Pupils sign up to promote road, community and personal safety

12 November 2015

This year’s Junior Safety Officers (JSO) are now busy promoting important messages of road, neighbourhood and personal safety to pupils, staff, their families and the wider community in West Cheshire - and competing for the star prize.

Two events took place to sign up the children after each school was invited to nominate two Year 6 pupils as JSO for this school year, generating a 100 percent take-up.

Working in partnership, Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Road Safety Officers and Cheshire Constabulary organised events in Winsford and Ellesmere Port where the children, accompanied by parents, family members and representatives from each school, were presented with their JSO packs.

The aim of the initiative is to communicate messages regarding road, community and personal safety to all pupils in each school.
As part of the scheme, the officers are now tasked with promoting positive messages about personal safety, road safety, fire safety and community safety, as well as organising competitions and setting up notice boards.

The first safety notice was for October and centred on ‘Be Bright Be Seen’ which focused on wearing bright clothes throughout autumn and winter, for the darker nights and shorter days.

Other messages over the forthcoming school year will include the Green Cross Code and internet safety.

During the launch each JSO received a handbook to record their work and these will be used to judge the JSO of the Year Award when the overall winners will be crowned the Junior Safety Officers of the Year 2015/16.

At the launch the JSOs were presented with their certificates, JSO badge and their packs.

Councillor Mark Henesy, Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities, said: “The JSO initiative has proved to be a successful partnership between Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cheshire Constabulary and our schools over a number of years.

"The children take their role very seriously and it is through them that the safety messages are promoted to everyone connected to their school. The JSO help us to ensure that everyone stays and feels safe in the area that they live.” Some of the newly appointed JSOs from schools across the borough.
