Christmas Lantern Parade in Chester on 1 December

23 November 2016

Chester’s Queen of Light will join hundreds of local school children for this year’s Lantern Parade on Thursday 1 December.

The giant Queen of Light will enter the city via the Eastgate at 6.45pm through temporary wooden gates, specially painted silver and white for the occasion to join the annual procession.

The children leave from Town Hall Square at 7pm, walking with their handmade lanterns past the Cathedral along St Werburgh Street, turning onto Eastgate Street, they will walk down Bridge Street, then turn around and head for Northgate Street, with the Parade ending at the Christmas Market in Town Hall Square.

Primary Schools taking part include Boughton Heath, Hoole, Belgrave, Chester Bluecoat, Tarporley and Cherry Grove. Local performing arts youth group DAPA will also join the parade.

Said Councillor Louise Gittins, Cabinet Member for Communities and Wellbeing: “Chester artist Russell Kirk has been working with local schools to show them how to make their own lanterns to carry in the parade.

“Russell will also be bringing his Queen of Light structure to add to the festive parade.” The Lantern Parade is part of Chester’s Christmas celebrations that include the Christmas market in Town Hall Square, Chester Zoo’s Lantern Magic, Chester Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival,  The Winter Watch Parade (8 December) and the combined Saturnalia and Winter Watch Parade (15 December).
