New Wharton Recreation Play and Fitness area opens
16 December 2015The new play and fitness area at Wharton Recreation Ground was officially opened by Town Mayor Councillor Ailsa Gaskill-Jones on Tuesday 8 December, with the help of Junior Mayor Shannon Mitchell. They were joined by youngsters from nearby Wharton Primary school who became the first to try out the exciting range of new equipment.
Brio Bear made an appearance, and a team from Active Cheshire was on hand to demonstrate the various pieces of fitness equipment in Wharton’s first outdoor gym.
The £85,000 scheme is the culmination of a seven year programme by Winsford Town Council to upgrade all its recreation grounds and play areas and was made possible thanks to a generous grant from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Limited) and contributions from the NHS Vale Royal Clinical Commissioning Group and Cheshire West and Chester Council.
A unique feature of the design is the incorporation of a large number of ‘salt mine’ graphics inspired by Winsford’s long salt heritage.
Said the Town Mayor ‘It was great to officially open the new play equipment and outdoor gym at Wharton. One resident has described it as "an early Christmas present" for the community. It really is a fantastic facility and I hope the residents of Wharton are able to make the most of it in the months and years to come’.
Echoing these sentiments, Town Clerk Alan Warburton added ‘We are extremely grateful to our funding partners, particularly WREN, who have supported every one of our improvement schemes over the past seven years. Without their support, Winsford youngsters wouldn’t be enjoying the superb play facilities they now have.
