Junior Safety Officers take up roles across Cheshire West and Chester

18 October 2017

Two events have taken place to sign up newly-appointed Junior Safety Officers (JSOs) to help promote road, neighbourhood and personal safety.

Head teachers were asked to nominate two children from year 6 to take up the role in primary schools across the area.

Working in partnership, Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Road Safety Officers and Cheshire Constabulary organised the special events in Winsford and Ellesmere Port.  The children, accompanied by parents, family members and representatives from each school, were presented with their JSO packs.

The overall aim of the initiative is to communicate messages regarding road safety, community safety and personal safety to all the pupils in each school, who will then, in turn, take home the safety messages to their families.

The JSOs are tasked with highlighting different messages each month as well as organising competitions, setting up notice boards and also of thinking about new ways to promote safety issues to everyone they meet.

The first safety messages for October focus on Be Bright Be Seen, concentrating on wearing bright clothes throughout autumn and winter; also how to stay safe when enjoying Bonfire Night on 5 November.

Other messages cover the Green Cross Code and internet safety amongst other useful safety advice that will be covered over the coming school year.

During the launch each JSO received a handbook to record their work and these will be used to judge the JSO of the Year Award.
The JSOs were presented with their certificates and badges by Chief Inspector Simon Meegan of Cheshire Constabulary and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Karen Shore, at Winsford.

Councillor Shore also presented the JSOs with their badges and certificates working alongside Chief Inspector Simon Draco at the Ellesmere Port event.

Councillor Karen Shore, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment said: “There has been a huge take up once again this year for the JSO initiative, which is a successful partnership between the Council and Cheshire Constabulary.

The children take their role very seriously and are excited to have been chosen to represent their school.  They are all very keen to get started and will be thinking of ways they can raise awareness of staying safe not just on our roads, but on the internet and in their own homes too.

"The JSOs help us make a difference, so everyone stays safe and feels safe in the area where they live.”
